Japanese experts, scientists visited and worked at the University of Transport and Communications
On the morning of August 5, 2025, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Van Hung, President of the University, welcomed a delegation of Japanese experts led by Prof. Dr. Kiyoshi Kobayashi from Kyoto University, along with specialists from the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) and the National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM), to visit and work at the University of Transport and Communications.

After the welcoming session, the Japanese experts and scientists participated in a scientific seminar on the theme “Developing Sustainable Maritime and Waterway Infrastructure in the New Context.” This event was part of a series of scientific and international cooperation activities organized by the University of Transport and Communications, aiming to enhance research capacity, education, and international integration in the field of transport.
Following the opening remarks by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Viet Thanh, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Prof. Dr. Kiyoshi Kobayashi (Kyoto University, Japan) delivered a keynote presentation on key issues in the sustainable development of maritime and waterway infrastructure in the new global context.

At the seminar, participants listened to several scientific presentations on maritime and waterway infrastructure: Dr. Nguyen Dinh Thao (Department of Highway and Airport Engineering, UTC) presented an analysis of scenarios and challenges in the green transition of the maritime and waterway sector; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Viet Thanh reported on the current situation, planning, and policies for the development of seaport and waterway systems in Vietnam; Dr. Nguyen Kim Thanh (Deputy Director of the Institute of Transport Science and Technology) introduced Vietnam’s system of port and harbor construction standards, along with outcomes of research and technical cooperation with Japan; Ms. Reina Kobayashi (expert from MLIT, Japan) presented the development process and technical standard system for ports and harbors in Japan; Mr. Sohei Jimbo (expert from NILIM, Japan) shared about the Vietnam–Japan cooperation project on developing national technical standards for seaport infrastructure.
After the presentations, the speakers, faculty members, and scientists from Vietnam and abroad actively engaged in discussions, sharing both practical and academic perspectives on sustainable maritime and waterway infrastructure.
Prof. Dr. Kiyoshi Kobayashi emphasized the importance of developing maritime and waterway infrastructure in the context of integration and green transition, aiming toward the sustainable development goals of the transport sector, as well as the opportunities for cooperation and information sharing between the two universities.
In closing the seminar, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Viet Thanh, on behalf of the Organizing Committee, highly appreciated the contributions of the speakers and participants. He also expressed the desire to further strengthen academic exchanges, joint research, and international cooperation in the field of seaports and inland waterways between the University of Transport and Communications, Kyoto University, and relevant agencies of Vietnam and Japan.
