UTC leads the development and finalization of master’s and doctoral programme standards in railway engineering

On the afternoon of 3 July, at Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST), the Ministry of Education and Training (MOET) organized a consultation workshop to gather feedback on the draft programme standards for master’s and doctoral education in railway engineering. The University of Transport and Communications (UTC) was assigned to lead the development of these standards, with the participation of higher education institutions, enterprises, and experts in the field.

Representatives of UTC’s drafting committee stated that the development team had studied railway education and training practices in a number of countries. Based on these experiences, the team proposed directions appropriate to Vietnam’s development context, with the aim of developing modern education programmes aligned with international standards and responsive to practical needs.

According to the draft, the master’s and doctoral programmes in railway engineering are structured around 11 core disciplines and 14 supporting and interdisciplinary disciplines, grouped into four specialized areas:

• Railway infrastructure construction and construction management. 
• Railway electrical, information, signalling, and control systems. 
• Railway rolling stock. 
• Railway economics and transport operations. 

This structure ensures consistency with the Undergraduate Programme Standards previously issued by the Ministry of Education and Training, while also providing a foundation for developing high-quality human resources to support Vietnam’s key national railway projects.

At the workshop, participants focused their feedback on learning outcomes, programme structure, conditions for ensuring training quality, strengthening practical and internship components, and closely aligning the programmes with the needs of enterprises and the implementation roadmap for national railway projects.

The fact that the University of Transport and Communications (UTC) has been assigned to lead the development of the Undergraduate Programme Standards—which have already been officially promulgated under a decision signed by the Minister of Education and Training—and the Postgraduate Programme Standards further demonstrates the University’s professional capacity, academic reputation, and pivotal role in developing high-quality human resources for Vietnam’s railway sector. This contribution will help realize the objectives of the Project on the Development of Human Resources for the Railway Sector to 2035, with a Vision to 2045.
