UTC Students shine at the 19th ATRANS Annual Conference

Students and lecturers from the University of Transport and Communications (UTC) presented six research papers at the 19th ATRANS Annual Conference, held in Bangkok, Thailand.

On August 28, 2026, a delegation of lecturers and students from the Faculty of Economics - Transportation, University of Transport and Communications (UTC), attended and presented six research papers at the 19th ATRANS Annual Conference, held at the Chatrium Grand Bangkok Hotel, Thailand. This year’s conference was organized under the theme “Resilient Mobility and Transportation Beyond Disruption,” with the aim of promoting the development of transportation systems that are adaptive, resilient, and sustainable in the face of increasingly complex global changes.

The presence of UTC research groups at this international forum further demonstrates the University’s proactive approach to international integration, the research capabilities of its lecturers and students, and their ability to engage with global issues in the field of transportation.

ATRANS Conference – A Prestigious Academic Forum in Transportation

The Asian Transportation Research Society (ATRANS) is an organization dedicated to transportation research in Asia. Since 2008, ATRANS has organized annual academic activities, bringing together experts, scientists, policymakers, and educational and research institutions in the field of transportation.

The ATRANS Annual Conference has become a platform for networking and exchanging research findings and solutions aimed at promoting safe, efficient, and sustainable transportation systems.

In 2026, the 19th ATRANS Annual Conference was held on August 28 at the Chatrium Grand Bangkok Hotel. As part of the conference, the Young Researcher’s Forum – AYRF 2026 provided an opportunity for young researchers and students to present their research at an international academic forum. According to official information from ATRANS, papers submitted to AYRF undergo a peer-review process, and only selected papers are published in the conference proceedings. The award selection process follows a double-blind review procedure.

In particular, ATRANS also provides financial support to authors of accepted papers from selected countries in the region, including Vietnam, enabling young researchers to attend the conference in person and present their research.

“Resilient Mobility and Transportation Beyond Disruption” – Building Resilient Transportation Systems Amid Global Disruptions

The theme “Resilient Mobility and Transportation Beyond Disruption” addresses a highly relevant issue in the transportation sector: how transportation systems can not only operate efficiently under normal conditions, but also adapt to disruptions, maintain continuity, and recover effectively in times of crisis.

At the conference, discussions focused on the resilience of transportation systems in the face of climate change, natural disasters, geopolitical instability, supply chain disruptions, and rapid technological changes. Issues related to multimodal connectivity, infrastructure development, technological applications, and enhancing the quality of human resources were also emphasized.

Some of the key research areas highlighted at the conference included:

• Sustainable and resilient urban transportation planning;
• Public transportation development and enhanced connectivity;
• Logistics and transportation amid supply chain disruptions;
• Road traffic safety;
• Smart transportation, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence applications;

The conference theme was also framed within the context of geopolitical, geo-economic, and technological shifts that are directly affecting international transportation and global supply chains. At the conference, a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand emphasized the role of infrastructure, technology, human resources, and international cooperation in building more interconnected and resilient transportation networks and supply chains.

Six Research Papers by UTC Lecturers and Students Presented at ATRANS 2026

Scientific research has long been one of the key activities receiving strong emphasis at the University of Transport and Communications (UTC), particularly at the Faculty of Transport Economics.

With the guidance and support of lecturers from the Department of Transport Operations and the Department of Logistics and Supply Chain Management, students majoring in Transport Operations, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, and Transport Economics have gradually engaged in highly practical research topics aligned with emerging trends in transportation development both nationally and internationally.

At the 19th ATRANS Annual Conference, the delegation from the Faculty of Transport Economics participated in the conference and presented six research papers selected through a peer-review process, covering a range of issues of growing interest, including transit-oriented urban development, passenger transportation, transportation electrification, greenhouse gas emissions, driving behavior, and green transformation in the freight forwarding sector.

1. Assessing the Impact of Transit-Oriented Development on Life Satisfaction: Evidence from Hanoi Metro Line 3.1

2. Motorcycle-based Ride-hailing as a Substitute for Parental Escorting in Children's School Travel: Empirical Evidence from Hanoi, Vietnam

4. Research on Greenhouse Gas Inventory for the Public Bus Transportation System in Hanoi City

5. The Effect of Delivery Time Pressure on Risky Driving Behavior among Truck Drivers in Vietnam: A Moderated Mediation Model

6. Electric Motorcycle Adoption Among Vulnerable Delivery Drivers: Evidence from Hanoi's Green Transport Transition

The study examines the adoption of and transition to electric motorcycles among delivery drivers in the context of Hanoi’s efforts to promote green transportation. The findings provide additional empirical evidence to support the transition to cleaner vehicles and emission reduction in the transportation sector.
